“Saravah”, pronounced sah-rah-VAH. A name has to summarize one’s mission and values – that’s why Saravah came easily to us. It encapsulates the essence of Afro-Brazilian spiritual traditions and translates to English as “welcome” or “good luck.”

This greeting serves as an open door to invite people into the cultures and traditions of Brazil. Saravah is often used when referring to the orixas (or-ree-shas) or deities of the spiritual traditions of Candomblé and Umbanda in Brazil.

About

We support Brazilian acts with various intersecting identities, including BIPOC, newcomer, new generation, and 2SLGBTQI+, who may face barriers in presenting their works on professional stages in Ottawa. Together, we advocate for the Brazilian community in Ottawa and establish safe environments for emerging artists and their audiences.

Through producing and promoting the music, arts, cultures, food, heritage, and people of Brazil in Ottawa, we aim to bring together Brazilians, Canadians and Latin Americans to engage with diverse cultures and have a true sense and feel of the history and culture of Brazil.  We also open the doors to people of all cultures and identities to take in the stories of Brazilian artists.

Mandate

Through close collaboration with Brazilians in Canada, we develop events to guide professional development, residencies, workshops, and we provide guidance to newcomers in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. We do this by:

  • Supporting Brazilian newcomers with housing and school recommendations, suggestions, basic items for living, clothes, and introductions to build their network.

  • Presenting exceptional Brazilian emerging and established artists who live in Canada and/or around the world.

  • Creating culturally diverse and family-friendly lineups to draw traditional and new audiences.

  • Supporting local and recently arrived Brazilian artists in establishing professional networks.

  • Producing events, partnering with other local Brazilian organizations, supporting more Brazilian artists, women, and minority forces to elevate and enrich the local scene.
